James is a total life saver for me. I have been having problems on and off for quite a few years and suffered immensely with back spasms acutely in past few weeks. After being pretty much on the floor for 3 days James got me walking within a 1.5 hour home visit and during our sessions at his clinic he helps me recognise the triggers of the pain and the solutions to deal with them. He's totally different to any other physio I've seen and his results speak for themselves. All my friends and family have been amazed at how quickly he's supported my recovery and whilst I'm not 100% as yet I'm much better than I've ever been (and find his educational approach and Cognitive Functional Therapy approach far more effective than medication / pain management injections and other interventions - all of which I've tried in the past!) Cannot recommend James highly enough!
Rajeeb Dey  Hornchurch, October 2018

Following 30 years of lower back pain, 2 operations including a discectomy at L4/L5 and numerous chiropractor and physio appointments I found James Davis. James takes an educational approach to treating his patients and having almost given up on finding a reason/cure for my back pain I was wholly receptive. As with most patients I was dismissive to begin with but as James repeated his advice a light slowly switched on. My back is currently 9 out of 10 but more importantly I believe that through James, I now understand the process and chain of events that creates the problem in the first place which is the most valuable tool to possess. Thanks James, hopefully you won’t see me again

Paul Brand, W Hanningfield, May 2018

I have seen James over several years and I love his holistic approach to physiotherapy, he doesn't just address the obvious problem but also those that might impact for other reasons. I recently saw James where he performed and Epley manoeuvre which my GP had recommended as I had been suffering for several months with nausea, dizziness and occasional falls to the extent where I was no longer able to drive or cross the road safely. My new GP diagnosed a condition called BPPV, a type of vertigo l caused by debris in the inner ear and she had recommended a look at some YouTube videos and to attempt the manoeuvre myself. My partner and I did indeed attempt the manoeuvre only to make it worse but I was absolutely astounded that a single session with James to effectively reposition the debris to a the part of my inner ear that doesn't interfere with balance and associated nausea and I was quite literally cured on the spot. I wouldn't have thought it possible.

Lucy Pollard-Gunnery, Chelmsford, May 2018

I first saw James Davis in October 2017 and after two sessions he referred me on to his colleague Ian Cowell, purely because of geographical accessibility. I had been suffering with persistent low back pain for almost a year.

This, my second bout (the first having started in 2000 and lasted for over six years) had started some months after hip surgery for a labral tear and had seemed to come from nowhere. My pain level ranged from medium to severe, very rarely let up, the strongest opiates barely touched it and I had given up almost all social, work and sporting activities. The pain was having a huge impact on my life and I was deeply depressed. Despite having been through something similar before and recovered, I was terrified that this was to be my life from now on, and it didn’t really seem worth living.

I wasn’t surprised to find that an MRI hadn’t revealed any structural problems that might account for the pain as I had spent many hours researching modern concepts and ideas about persistent pain and knew that there was little correlation between symptoms and what can be seen on a scan.

Rather I understood that persistent pain was a problem of sensitisation of the central nervous system and I had spent the year seeing a number of practitioners to try to ‘fix’ my pain through a bio-psycho-social approach. This included trying to return as much as possible to a ‘normal’ life (which I failed to do), doing things that gave me pleasure (almost nothing), regular appointments with a ‘pain-physio’, a psychotherapist, a clinical psychologist and a cranial osteopath, meditation two or three-times a day, frequent mindfulness, visualization, mind-body exercises, relaxation, self-massage, improving my balance and so on. None of this helped.

Very occasionally late at night or when I was deeply distracted by something pleasurable, my pain would unpredictably and mysteriously disappear. Other than that I woke up with it and went to bed with it every day and the only slight relief I had was from a TENS (Trans-cutaneous electro-stimulation) unit and from cold water swimming which temporarily numbed the pain.

Endless Googling, frequently reading and re-reading the same stories, finally led me to James, Ian and Cognitive Functional Therapy. After two appointments with James and five or six with Ian I began to feel better. I now consider myself completely recovered, at least for the time being!

So what did James and Ian say and do that was different? Two things: - firstly they recognized that the muscles in my mid-back were in a constant state of contraction and had probably been this way for some time and taught me how to relax them. Secondly Ian’s view, as I understood it, was that my brain needed to learn that my body was not in danger and I needed to stop all ‘pain behaviour’; no more researching about pain, no more reading about pain, no more listening to radio programmes about pain, no rubbing or stretching painful parts of my body, no grimacing or moaning; in fact absolutely no specific activities or treatments designed to relieve pain at all, not even the use of the TENS.

All I can say is that it worked! Today I am pain free, back to doing everything I was doing before the pain struck, and am off on a skiing holiday next week. Life is back to normal, which I never dreamed it would be - and I’m still cold-water swimming! I will be forever indebted to James and especially to Ian – it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that they might actually have saved my life.

Vicky Joseph, London, March 2018

I saw James after suffering with Migraines for many years.

He spends a lot of time listening and looking at the patient rather than seeking a quick fix that means you have to keep going back for more treatment. His philosophy is to find the cause of the problem then show the patient how they can correct it themselves. I left with a raft of exercises to do, all photographed on my phone as a reminder and a clear understanding of why my neck was causing me so many problems. I haven't had a migraine since.

Patricia Fowler  retired Physiotherapist, Sittingbourne, Kent, February 2018

I was referred to James after a double disc replacement in my neck performed by my surgeon, Mr Peter Hamlyn at The Princess Grace Hospital. Physio was recommended to me to strengthen and assist my recovery after the op. Prior to coming to James, i knew very little on the mechanics of the neck and back and how important good posture is. James has a vast knowledge and has taught me, that even after successful surgery, it is imperative to understand and maintain a good posture and keep up the exercises he has taught me. It has been revolutionary!! I now feel confident to maintain all that I’ve learnt and know that if I have any further problems, I would only need a physio and would only come back to James. Thankyou James!!
Melanie Handell, Chelmsford, February 2018

James is diligent and effective in his treatment, all of which is backed up by good conversation. I’ve specifically asked my health provider to refer me to James on two occasions and would do so again.
Dale Kaszycki  Chelmsford, February 2018

Hi James,

I am writing to thank you so much for sorting me out-I was doubtful when you said I probably wouldn’t need to keep my appointment in late December but of course you knew that I wouldn’t.

I have resumed ergs & outings & have had NO pain! My Glutes are so much stronger & I LOVE belly- breathing! Needless to say the articles have been brilliant & I am crossing my fingers that I’m not on holiday when Prof O’Sullivan comes over.

I cannot thank you enough for giving me 100% escape from my increasing symptoms...as long as I do my exercises-No question of adherence needless to say!

Kind regards,

Claudine Chippin  Physiotherapist, Surrey, January 2018

James has been great. I've had lower back pain for 30 odd years, usually manifesting as spasms that can leave me unable to walk. In the past I've had massage, acupuncture, but most regularly chiropractic treatment. Of these Chiro worked, but only at alleviating the symptoms not addressing the cause. James has got me to think differently about my back and how I deal with it, my first appointment was end Feb and I couldn't walk without my wife's help. I was discharged last week after 6 appointments and have done all the stuff that has previously caused me issues with no adverse effects. I'm still doing my exercises daily, and now stretch whenever my back feels a bit tight. Really been great for me.

Thanks James   Tahir Sharif    Chelmsford, January 2018

James's combination of regular thorough questioning, accommodating my sporadic visits (two young children) and focusing on the way I moved, lifted, drove, sat etc., has resulted in dramatic changes that have enabled me to live pain free, despite having spondylolisthesis and a left labral tear. Worth the journey from Leigh-on-Sea to Chelmsford and worth every penny.
Louise Smith, Leigh-on-Sea, December 2017

After many years of suffering with various levels of back pain and seeking medical advice and specialist treatment, I still had no meaningful improvement. So I was thinking that I would have to suffer back pain for the rest of my life.. ......However, I was recommended by a friend to visit James and how glad I was !!!  His understanding of my symptoms and the expertise he had in putting together a exercise regime tailored to my needs was nothing short of a revelation. In Just 10 weeks of focused exercise under the careful guidance and support of James he has transformed my day to day living to a level which I thought I would never get to, which is free of pain. The professionalism and calm manor in which James has guided me in just 4 visits would make me highly recommend him to anybody.

Amanda Murray, Chelmsford, December 2017

After being advised to have an operation on my back with only a 60% success rate, I decided to see James as a last resort. I now rarely suffer any pain and able to manage any pain I get. Glad I didn’t have the operation. Highly recommended.
Dereck Coulson, Leigh-on-Sea, October 2017

James, I cannot thank you enough.

When I came to you following a prolapse disc in my neck, I was a bag of nerves about my health. Your reassuring, kind, professional care is something I will never forget.

Your patient explanation of my condition, what had happened, what I could do about it and what the potential outcome could be … all served to put my mind completely at ease.

You managed to give me the confidence (and the exercise programme) which has resulted in a full recovery. I love the setting; I love that I can park so easily. I love that you send a text to remind me of my appointment. I love that I can have very early appointment times before work: …and I love that I am now back to full activities.

A heartfelt thank you James. To anyone reading this, you are in the best and the safest of hands!
Nicky Browne, Chelmsford, September 2017

James literally saved my life.

I have had back problems from the age of 17 but at 24 I got so bad that for 3 years I was stuck in a bed in my living room unable to walk. I was in and out of hospital frequently with the extreme pain.

Doctors and hospital just kept giving me more and more pain meds which damaged my liver and never really helped, and told me it was all in my head I had nothing wrong with me but I knew the pain was real and something wasn't right.

I was left and told they couldn't do anymore and I would have to just live with it.

After the third year I finally got moving about with some NHS physio I was still house bound and having to use a wheelchair if I went out but could only be out for very short periods.

Then 2017 my back pain went so bad I couldn't stop screaming in pain and again I was rushed into hospital knowing I was going to have the same thing happen of being told there's nothing more they can do my depression and mood went down hill fast I thought this was it I would never be out of this pain and stuck forever like this.

I met a new surgeon in the hospital and he actually gave me a spinal block which worked for week it was the first time in 13years I had no pain, but unfortunately it wore of quickly.

He happened to have just heard about James and gave me his number, recommend I see him before they gave me surgery.

We couldn't really afford private treatment but had got to the point where we needed to do something. Straight away over the phone James could tell I was tensing and doing things wrong and started correcting me there and then before an appointment. He came to see me at my mother in laws where I had to stay for a while and within a week i was walking again, I had to work hard at it and change not only the wrong exercises I was given to do for years but my mind set.

At first I thought great another person who thinks it's all in my head and I'm not in pain but James helped me see that he knew the pain was very real but how the body remembers pain and can fool your nervous system into being so sensitive even the thought of doing something made you hurt.

This was exactly what was happening he corrected the exercises, made me move even more and changed how I thought about pain and gave me my life back.

If I hadn't of seen him and had the treatment I was needing for years I would have had an unnecessary operation and I would not be here today.

I recommend anyone who needs help or can't seem to find a solution to see him he will truly change your life.

I'm now walking miles and cycling I'm pretty much doing everything I can and more I never thought I would ever be back to me again and after losing all those years from doctors not understanding and telling me I was making it up to finally having someone who understands and really listens and helps I can do ANYTHING I want to.

Thank you so much James for giving my life back to me and for all you did without you I honestly wouldn't be here today xx    Melanie Reed, Dunmow September, 2017

James has not only treated the pain and discomfort I was suffering with, but has also helped me to understand how posture and day to day activities can affect the body.  When I regularly maintain the exercises and correct postures I have much less discomfort and pain.  His help has been excellent and I would recommend his services.

Sue Carter, Chelmsford, August 2017

Prior to seeing James for physiotherapy I was in constant - sometimes debilitating - pain.

Having seen him at his practice (and discussing the possibility of attending a seminar with Professor Peter O'Sullivan), I found that the breathing and physical exercises that James suggested gave me a great deal of relief. I'd like to thank James for putting me forward as a candidate for the seminar. I had to be driven to the seminar by a friend.  Peter made me feel as comfortable as possible when I first winced into the chair on the stage in the lecture hall. I was racked with intermittent bolts of pain in my left leg and a claw- like constriction and pain in my lower back. During the next couple of hours, in front of hundreds of practitioners in the hall, Peter asked me lots of questions regarding my situation, level of (obvious to all) pain and the history surrounding my back condition and the resulting pain.

Through discussion, challenge and a series of gradually more difficult exercises, coupled with breathing correctly, Peter had me bending, squatting and even picking up and replacing boxes onto the stage. I'm still amazed at the almost miraculous transformation from when I arrived at the Royal Free to carrying out movements I had been unable to do for nearly a year.

I gladly returned the following day driving my own car this time, to (hopefully) help to reinforce the learnings from the previous day - for both the attendees and for myself.

I still find it amazing that I can now do things I haven't been able to for ages. This, I believe, is due to the refreshing and innovative approach taken by Peter and his team-and the group of therapists-who already use those ideas and techniques in their own practices.

I learnt that fear and pain are very closely linked.

I have been helped to a huge degree first by James Davis and then of course Peter, to break the 'fear/pain' link.

I've gone from a pain level of almost constant '10' down to '1' and on some blissful days; none at all. I am happy for my comments to be used freely in any medium, because I firmly believe that this approach can change people's lives.

Thanks again Peter and James, for inviting me to be there on the day to assist you in showing your colleagues and others the very insightful and powerful application of your ideas.

Kind regards and best wishes
George Currell   Brentwood, July 2017

Hi James,

I ran the Greater Manchester Marathon, with no pain from the issues I visited you with initially. Painful outer left knee - buttock pain and lower hamstring pulling pain. My time of 4:09 was not what I was hoping for, unfortunately I found myself out on my feet from around 18 miles - so the remainder was a combination of walking and running. (The conditions were warmer and sunnier than expected).

I really appreciate your clear diagnosis and the exercises you provided me with to get over what I thought may be something that stopped me getting to the starting line - so, many thanks for that! The confidence that provided me with was invaluable and made a huge difference to the way I approached and subsequently ran the marathon, mentally and physically. Best Wishes        Steve Browne Leigh-on-Sea, June 2017

After a cricket shoulder injury from last season, it seemed that an operation was needed.  After my first visit to see James he identified a key reason why the pain still existed due to 'POSTURE' during working at a desk with the computer for many hours in the day & driving position.  James indicated that these also would have been the main cause for the shoulder injury in the first place.  So even if an operation was conducted the problem would not have gone away. Since last week’s first appointment I already have changed my work posture and attention to what James has told me with daily exercises.  In this first week I can say I feel so much better with almost no pain in the shoulder, however he still needs to work on mobility of the shoulder over the coming weeks. So more exercises are key, but not any old exercises, these are very focused in the specific areas to regain the mobility.  I am so glad I got the opportunity to have a second opinion from the surgeon and his recommendation to use James Davis.  Looking forward for my first net!

Excellent in every way. Understanding the problem specific to my individual issues and the advice and confidence given to get on with a good quality of life is commendable.

I can't recommend James highly enough. He managed to treat and help me manage pain which I had been suffering for a long time and other health professionals mis-diagnosed. Very good physiotherapist.

Tremendous help and the relief

I had been suffering with back pain for many years, trying NHS Physio, chiropractors etc. where I started to finally give up and accept the pain. However in December 15 it got much worse to the degree that it hurt to stand or sit or doing anything and was affecting my day to day life. I started worrying at the age of 25 that I was never going to be pain free and normal again or worrying it was something worse.

I then went to a private hospital for various tests all looking for the worst case and once these all came back negative I was later referred to a specialist for back pain “James Davis”. I have only had 7 sessions with James and I am almost back to my normal self. I have to admit when I was first referred to James/physiotherapy I was sceptical because I have been to NHS physio before and it never helped. How glad I am that I gave my referral a go and met James.

Thank you so much for all your help James. Your knowledge in my back pain and knowing everything that helped has been tremendous help and the relief now from not letting back pain rule my life. Thank you for helping me feel like a young person again and given me my youth back. I honestly didn’t think I could go a minute let alone a day without thinking about the pain or letting it rule me.

I will continue with all the exercises and knowledge you bestowed to me and if I ever have problems again won’t hesitate to call you.

I could confidently and highly recommend James to other sufferers. His knowledge in chronic lower back pain is amazing. If you are as sceptical as I was prior treatment, try a session and you won’t leave without booking another and be on the road to a pain free life again.

Stephanie Hastings Basildon, Essex (March 2016)

After struggling with getting help from my GP and trying to get an appointment with an NHS Physiotherapist I opted for trying James' practice. From the first session James was able to correctly identify my problems and give me good advice for managing my injuries, this was a surprise for me - he pinpointed the cause and location of my injuries within 10 minutes from the start of the session. Over the space of several months James supported the process of recovery by giving me advice and treatment and 5 sessions later I was able to be discharged due to his treatment. I couldn't recommend him enough as a Physiotherapist, he is understanding and tailors his programmes and treatment exactly to your lifestyle, taking into account all variables of your daily routine and giving you advice on how to save money on expensive products. I will be recommending him to friends and family. Thank you James.

Anton Maigre  Chelmsford, August, 2015

James is a brilliant physiotherapist, I can't thank him enough for the caring and professional service he provides.

I came into see James for the first time in a lot of pain with my neck, shoulder, and arm and was on some very strong pain killers, given to me by my local GP. I came into James consultation room unable to move properly and upon leaving I was able to get some movement back and was in less pain. I would recommend James to everyone that ever has a problem as not only is he able to give you your movement back but also puts your mind to rest and in a positive attitude to overcoming agony. If it wasn't for his help I wouldn't have been unable to return back to work.

Thank you James!

Paul Smith Leigh-on-Sea, April, 2015

I would recommend James to anyone, He basically got me able to walk again after a nasty accident during an ice staking lesson! After months of the NHS being no help at all, I referred myself to James from a recommendation. James was thorough with explaining the problem and the exercises for me to do at home. After 5 sessions I was able to put my crutches down and walk freely. James is a very patient, kind and friendly man who can diagnose a problem within the first 10 minets of the consultation. He gave me so much reassurance that I would be able to get back to normality as soon as possible. I would 100% use James again in the future and I would recommend his services to anyone. The practice staff also make you feel incredibly welcome and there customer service skills are approachable. Thank you so much James for all of your help.
Molly Giles  Billericay, February, 2015

There are times in life when pain is unbearable and life is difficult. And, you become a pain in he butt to others around you. At such a time I contacted James for help. He is a genuinely patient-focussed man who cares about your health and wellbeing. He patiently and encouragingly worked with me to help me regain health, confidence and happiness. He is an expert who understands the needs of his patients and how to support them to move on in life. As a pharmacist I know about drugs but James knows about the body, it's weak points, and how to help patient start, maintain and control the journey back to health. I owe my health, happiness and renewed confidence to James, in whom I have complete trust. That is why I send friends and family to him now when they have a problem with pain. Without hesitation, I recommend James.
Hemant Patel  Shenfield, January, 2015

I have known James for many years, since 1992 in fact when he first came to work with me at Essex CCC after four years at Lords, on the recommendation of some of my players at the time. Physios in cricket spend a lot of their time looking afer bowlers and batsmen but fortunately I had just a few occasions to call upon his expertise when I was playing for Essex and England. I have used him more since I retired from playing cricket and he has always sorted me out quickly especially when I was the batting coach for England.

His approach to physiotherapy is very different and far more effective than other forms of physiotherapy, and I have seen a lot in my time, because he always treats the cause so that your pain or problem goes within a few treatments. James does not use machines but relies on his skills to assess movement problems and then gives the right exercises to get you better. I know he looks on the world stage for effective treatments with strong professional ties with Australia.

Nothing is too much trouble for him and if he feels the solution is not a physio thing he has an excellent network of medical consultants to call upon who can resolve the problem quickly. In professional sport it is vital to have someone to rely on to get you or the players under my jurisdiction better quickly and James seems to do that efficiently and without fuss. That is why I send my family along to him when the need arises and so I would thoroughly recommend anyone to use him. Thanks for all your help James, I really appreciate it.

Graham Gooch, former Captain & Coach of Essex CCC and England, October 2014

I had been suffering from lower back pain for five months before I was referred to James by Prof John Dowell. Prior to my referral I had been treated by many well-meaning professionals who had given me conflicting advice. I was living in constant pain that had completely altered my life, I had given up working and any hope of a social life. Everyday tasks such as bending to reach into cupboards were beyond me, and I felt that I would never have a normal pain free life again. After starting my treatment with James within a few weeks I was 80% better, and I now have my life back. I have resumed work, my studies and going to the gym, and feel able to play an active role in my family as a wife and mother. Thank you so much for all your help James.

Julie, Chelmsford, September 2014

Good afternoon James

I’m just writing to thank you for your treatment for my back. I have had a “bad back” for years, mainly due to sciatica, in the last year the pain had become so bad, particularly in the morning, that I had a consultation with an orthopaedic surgeon.  He recommended getting an appointment with yourself. I must admit to being sceptical at first.  Over the years I have met many people claimed to be able to alleviate my problem.  They all knew exactly what it was and they could cure the problem in no time at all. None were even remotely successful. You made no promises, simply stated what you thought my problem was and then demonstrated, to my entire satisfaction, that you were right.  The exercises you showed me helped enormously and my back seems to be a little better each day.  I have even been able to mix cement and build a garden wall, something that would have been out of the question a couple of months ago.  Thank you again for all your help.

Kind regards
Gerry Moore  Hatfield Peverel, May 2014

James has been my regular physiotherapist for the last two years and I have no hesitation in highly recommending him both for treating existing conditions and also for advising on preventive measures and exercises for those engaged in physically challenging activities. He always treats the cause rather than the symptoms which gives you both the quickest possible relief and also the tools to deal with it should discomfort occur at the same location in the future. This also means you usually only need a small number of sessions rather than having to go back constantly for the treatment of symptoms. He is exceptional at matching treatments and exercises to your lifestyle eg. use of exercise bands instead of free weights if you travel. He is also able to advise via Skype if you need assistance whilst travelling or abroad. I go to James for physical conditioning for my career as a professional pianist and I think he is exceptional: I'd recommend him to anyone, whether injured or wanting advice on preventative measures.

Alisdair Hogarth. Professional classical pianist. Billericay, November 2013

As a busy hospital consultant and keen cyclist I developed increasingly severe low back pain. After seeing a series of Harley street specialists without success. James took a different approach and pointed out that many things I had tried were counter-productive. After just three sessions working on posture, breathing and flexibility I was able to give up the painkillers completely and return to cycling. I would thoroughly recommend James to any friends or patients for his unique approach and thoughtful and caring patient centre style

Dr Richard Taylor, Consultant Psychiatrist, London, June 2013

James Davis was recommended to me by a local orthopaedic spinal surgeon after an MRI scan for my chronic lower back pain. I have suffered severe lower back pain on and off for many years and have received treatment from various different sources (physiotherapists, Chinese medicine, chiropractors & osteopaths) without any long term success.

I had a real fear that I would end up in a wheelchair. James diagnosed my problems and after 7 sessions I am now pain free. This was achieved through various exercises (in particular belly breathing), watching 3 clips on his website under Patient Information and talking (fear in the mind is a very powerful factor). I am now very confident of my long term health and would highly recommend James to other sufferers.

Mr Andrew Lowe, Chelmsford, November, 2012

Further to my recent visits to your clinic in Chelmsford, I am pleased to say that the treatment that you carried out on my shoulders, back and hip have helped me immensely, so much to say that on one occasion it felt like a miracle had occurred the following day after your treatment. After years of pain and discomfort I felt I had to write to let you know. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
